The Disability Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (DRC) made 222 landmark recommendations to prevent harm and strengthen rights and accountability across Australia.
It has now been over two-and-a-half years since the DRC final report was released, and progress in implementing the DRC has been slow and inconsistent. Despite $160 million investment on the DRC implementation, governments have repeatedly missed key deadlines, and most recommendations seem to have been swept aside.
That is why we are tracking the DRC. We can’t let this Royal Commission be forgotten.
Today, QIDAN is launching The DRC Still Matters Campaign, which brings together what governments say they’re doing, and what we have found they have actually done. Rather than just relying on what governments say they have achieved, QIDAN is independently analysing public information to better understand the real implementation and impact of the DRC recommendations in Queensland
What we have found is deeply concerning: only 3% of recommendations have been implemented in Queensland, and over half have no progress to report at all. You can find out more about what we found in our report [here]
Last week, the Federal Budget allocated just $4.2 million over two years toward disability reform – an investment they say is for further consultation. But consultations have happened. The DRC ended in 2023, and now is the time for action.
Over the next couple of months we will be breaking down the DRC volume by volume, and sharing our key findings with you. But there is still work we need to do to make our findings accessible to everyone, and we need your help.
