QIDAN has welcomed the proposed Victims’ Advocate Service, which aims to provide victims of crime with coordinated information, navigation assistance and referrals to existing support services.
QIDAN’s submission highlights the need to ensure the new service is accessible and responsive to the needs of people with disability. This includes providing information in accessible formats, disability awareness training for staff, clear processes for requesting reasonable adjustments, and systems that prevent people from having to repeatedly retell their experiences.
QIDAN also calls for accurate and transparent referrals and, where appropriate, warm referral pathways where the Victims’ Advocate Service directly connects a person with disability to the service they need. This can help prevent people becoming caught in referral loops and giving up on seeking support.
