The Queensland Independent Disability Advocacy Network (QIDAN) has made a submission to the Australian Government’s consultation on a new Commonwealth Individual Disability Advocacy Program (IDAP). Drawing on the lived experiences of independent disability advocates across Queensland, the submission outlines why advocacy must be recognised as a core safeguarding, early-intervention, and prevention measure. It calls for strong independence from service provision, secure long-term funding, support for place-based and systemic advocacy, and culturally safe, trauma-informed advocacy for people most at risk of harm. QIDAN’s recommendations aim to ensure the new IDAP delivers safer communities, stronger systems, and better outcomes for people with disability.
